I miss who I was before you

For a while, I thought maybe I still missed you. I would think about the past, get sad, and wonder if that meant I wasn’t really over everything. But the more time that passes, the more I realize I don’t actually miss you. I miss who I was before you.

I miss the version of myself who trusted people without questioning everything. I miss not analyzing conversations afterward or wondering if someone is telling me the truth. More than anything, I miss trusting myself. I used to make decisions without second-guessing them. I didn’t wonder if I was being too sensitive, asking for too much, or somehow creating problems that weren’t really there.

I don’t even know exactly when that changed. I think it happened slowly. You go through enough things and eventually you start questioning yourself without even realizing you’re doing it. You make excuses. You ignore that feeling in your stomach. You convince yourself things aren’t as bad as they feel. After a while, you don’t really know what to trust anymore, including yourself.

That’s something I didn’t expect when everything ended. I knew I would have to get over the relationship. I knew there would be sadness and anger and all the normal breakup stuff. What I didn’t realize was that I would also have to figure out who I was again.

Nobody really talks about that part. Everyone asks if you miss the person or if you would ever go back, but nobody asks if you miss yourself. And honestly, I do. I miss how much lighter I used to be. I miss not always waiting for something to go wrong. I miss believing people when they said something instead of wondering what they really meant. I miss not having my guard up all the time.

Sometimes I even miss being a little naive. I know that probably sounds strange, because we’re supposed to be grateful for all the lessons we learn from experiences. We’re supposed to say they made us stronger and wiser. And yes, I learned a lot, but sometimes I didn’t want to become stronger. Sometimes I just wanted to stay soft. I would have rather learned these lessons without having to lose so much of myself first.

There are still times when I wonder who I would be if none of it had happened. Would I trust differently? Would I be more confident? Would I have made different choices? I know there’s no point in going too far down that road because I can’t go back and meet that version of myself again. I can’t warn her. I can’t tell her to trust her gut or leave sooner. I can’t protect her from what she doesn’t know is coming.

And maybe that’s what makes me sad when I think about the past. It isn’t that I want the relationship back. I don’t. I don’t miss the chaos, and I don’t want another chance to make it work. I think I just associate that time with a version of myself I wish I could have back.

The good thing is, I’m starting to see little pieces of her again. Sometimes I laugh and realize I haven’t thought about any of this all day. Sometimes I make a decision without questioning myself afterward. Sometimes I get excited about something or make plans for my future and feel like myself again.

Maybe I’ll never be exactly who I was before, and I’m still not sure how I feel about that. I’m trying to accept that getting myself back might not mean becoming the old me again. Maybe it just means finding the parts of myself that were always there and learning to trust them again.

So when I think about the past now and feel that little ache, I understand it differently. I spent a long time thinking it meant some part of me still missed you.

I think I just missed me.
